That blockbuster $111bn Paramount-Warner Bros deal was completed earlier this week, and the combined firms will now be known as Skydance.
And while most of the attention has been on all those TV and film properties being brought together under one roof, there are also plenty of mobile games involved in this deal
.
The games leadership at Skydance is also taking shape.
Variety reported
that former Epic Games exec Tony Driscoll has been appointed president of games and experiences, and that the newly-formed Paramount Games Studios will combine with Warner Bros’ existing portfolio of game developers.
Former Activision boss Bobby Kotick has also been appointed to the Skydance board,
said Variety
.
They’ll now be in charge of a mixed bag of internally-made and licensed mobile games which we’ve outlined and explained below. We’ve also provided estimates of what each title is earning per month in IAP revenue with the help of
AppMagic estimates.
Warner’s fully-owned mobile games
Warner’s two Game of Thrones titles, subtitled Dragnofire and Conquest, are the top earners currently, according to AppMagic data.
Game of Thrones: Dragonfire
launched on June 2 and is currently the top earner in the Warner portfolio by monthly IAP revenue – having earned $3.5m in July, $4.5m in August and $3.3m in September.
Game of Thrones Conquest
has been on the app stores since 2017, but is still pulling in decent numbers – around $1.2m for July and August, and just under $1m for September.
Released in 2015,
Mortal Kombat
is currently Warner’s third most lucrative title, earning on average just under $1m per month in IAP revenue.
There’s a notable drop in IAP revenue in the next bracket of games, when sorted by their earnings in the last 30 days.
Injustice 2
($432k),
Injustice
($299k),
Heads Up!
($289k), and
DC Worlds Collide
($246k) are the games still bringing in meaningful revenue.
Then there’s a whole load of legacy Lego games earning $10-30k per month, led by
Lego Star Wars
,
Lego Ninjago
,
Lego Marvel Super Heroes
,
Lego Jurassic World
and
Lego Batman
.
Warner’s licensed Harry Potter games
Warner’s licensed games are much more notable in terms of IAP revenue. Jam City’s
Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery
pulls in $1.6-1.8m on a typical month, and Warner will collect a portion of that income as a licensor.
Harry Potter: Puzzles & Spells
nets Zynga around $1.2m in a typical month, while NetEase operates
Harry Potter: Magic Awakened
in China and other Asian markets. This one had been earning around $300k per month on average but leapt up to generate about $1m in September.
Warner’s licensed Game of Thrones games
Zynga’s
Game of Thrones Slots Casino
is easily the leader here, generating about $1.6m in a typical month. Fellow Zynga title
Game of Thrones: Legends
nets about $700k monthly, while Netmarble’s
Game of Thrones: Kingsroad
is struggling and may soon be for the chop: its IAP revenue has been in rapid decline in the last few months and it earned just $60k in September.
Revenue from Twin Sails’
Game of Thrones Board Games
and Nerial/Devolver’s
Reigns: Game of Thrones
is negligible.
Warner and Paramount’s other licensed games
FunPlus’
DC Dark Legion
is a steady earner, according to AppMagic, typically earning just under $1m per month, but the other notable DC games are made and run in-house.
Which brings us to Paramount’s myriad licensed games. There’s a load of Spongebob titles, but AppMagic suggests the only one generating notable IAP revenue currently is Tilting Point’s
SpongeBob Adventures: In A Jam
, which generated about $200k last month.
SpongeBob: Krusty Cook Off
seems to be one of the better performers on Apple Arcade, and is also run by Tilting Point, but revenue from that title is hard to discern.
Two Star Trek games are worth noting: Scopely’s
Star Trek Fleet Command
earns a steady $2m per month and generates plenty more from webshops, while Tilting Point’s
Star Trek Timelines
generates a more modest $180-200k per month on average. Tilting Point also operates
Avatar: Realms Collide
, which is declining but generally earns about $500k per month.
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IP is also owned by Paramount. Playdigious operates
TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge
but revenues from that are low, though TMNT seem to turn up as a crossover collab in most major mobile games at some point.
As we reported recently, Scopely’s
Looney Tunes World of Mayhem
closed in October, having earned an estimated $106m in its nearly eight years on the app stores. NetEase’s
Tom and Jerry: Chase
does modest business in China, earning about $120-150k per month.
